Dell and Super Micro to Supply Server Racks for xAI’s Supercomputer

Dell Technologies and Super Micro Computer have been chosen to supply server racks for the supercomputer being developed by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, Musk announced on social media platform X.

Musk stated that Dell is responsible for assembling half of the server racks for xAI’s supercomputer. When asked about the other partner involved, he confirmed that Super Micro, a well-known server manufacturer, would also be contributing.

San Francisco-based Super Micro, recognized for its strong relationships with chip manufacturers like Nvidia and its advanced liquid-cooling technology, confirmed the collaboration with xAI to Reuters.

In a separate post on X, Dell CEO Michael Dell mentioned that the company is building an “AI factory” in partnership with Nvidia, aimed at powering the next iteration of xAI’s chatbot, Grok.

According to a May report by The Information, Musk informed investors that xAI plans to construct a supercomputer to support the next version of its AI chatbot, Grok. The training of AI models such as Grok demands tens of thousands of powerful, energy-intensive chips, which are currently in short supply.

Earlier this year, Musk revealed that training the Grok 2 model required approximately 20,000 Nvidia H100 graphic processing units (GPUs). He added that the Grok 3 model and future iterations would necessitate around 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips. Musk aims to have the supercomputer operational by the fall of 2025, according to The Information.

Musk founded xAI last year as a competitor to Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google’s AI initiatives. Notably, Musk is also a co-founder of OpenAI.
