OpenAI Launches GPT-4o, a Swift and Gratis AI Model Accessible to Everyone

OpenAI, headquartered in San Francisco, recently unveiled an upgraded version of its ChatGPT AI tool, called GPT-4o, which promises better performance and a more human-like interaction. This new iteration, dubbed “omni,” is now freely accessible to all users. The announcement came just before Google’s anticipated revelation of Gemini, its own competing AI technology.

During the launch event, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, expressed excitement about offering GPT-4o to a wider audience. The company plans to integrate the new model into its products gradually over the next few weeks, with unlimited access for paid subscribers.

GPT-4o boasts the ability to process voice, text, and images, enhancing user experience across various interfaces. OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, praised the new voice and video mode, likening it to the AI depicted in movies. He specifically referenced the character portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in “Her” as an inspiration for natural AI interactions.

At the virtual event, Murati and OpenAI engineers showcased GPT-4o’s capabilities through live demonstrations. These included tasks such as language translation, facial expression interpretation, and even assisting with algebra problems. The chatbot responded with humor and engaging banter, mimicking human-like interactions.

The upgraded model retains its predecessor’s proficiency in text comprehension, reasoning, and coding intelligence, while also setting new standards for multilingual conversations, audio processing, and visual recognition. Notably, in one demonstration, ChatGPT accurately described a user’s surroundings captured through a smartphone camera, exhibiting a friendly and personable demeanor.

Despite speculation about OpenAI’s potential release of a search tool to rival Google’s, Altman clarified that this was not on the immediate agenda. Additionally, while there were expectations for GPT-5, Altman emphasized a cautious approach to major model releases.

The competitive landscape of AI sees OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, vying against tech giants like Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), and emerging players like Anthropic. These companies are engaged in an intense race to dominate generative AI, with significant investments in research and development.

Monetizing AI remains a challenge, with substantial costs associated with infrastructure, particularly in GPU semiconductors provided by companies like Nvidia.
