WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court is set to issue its ruling on Monday regarding former President Donald Trump’s claim of immunity from prosecution over actions taken to contest the results of the 2020 election, marking the conclusion of its current term.
Chief Justice John Roberts announced July 1 as the final day of the court’s term, which commenced last October. “At that time, we will announce all remaining opinions ready during this term of the court,” Roberts stated during Friday’s session.
Among the pending decisions are Trump’s appeal following lower court rejections of his bid for immunity from four election-related criminal charges. These charges stem from actions taken while Trump was in office, leading to an indictment obtained by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Other cases awaiting rulings include challenges to Republican-backed laws in Florida and Texas aimed at limiting social media platforms’ authority to regulate objectionable content, and a North Dakota convenience store’s challenge to government regulations on debit card “swipe fees,” potentially impacting federal business regulations.
During April’s arguments, the court’s conservative justices hinted at support for granting former presidents some immunity from criminal charges related to their official actions, yet appeared skeptical of Trump’s plea for absolute immunity.
The Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision may narrow the scope of allegations against Trump by the special counsel, possibly delaying his trial scheduled for March. The ruling is anticipated to have significant implications for presidential immunity and ongoing legal challenges.
In another major decision on Friday, the court’s conservative majority overturned a 1984 precedent that had favored government agencies in interpreting laws they administer, dealing a setback to President Joe Biden’s administration and federal regulatory powers.
The Supreme Court’s rulings next week are expected to shape legal and political landscapes as it concludes its term amid heightened scrutiny and polarized opinions on key issues impacting the nation.
