According to reports, WhatsApp is gearing up to integrate artificial intelligence-powered image creation tools into various features. After successful trials of AI-generated stickers, WhatsApp is now experimenting with a feature that enables users to create AI-generated profile pictures, as per WhatsApp’s update tracking platform, WABetaInfo.
The latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, accessible to a limited number of users via the Google Play Store, introduces a new functionality allowing users to generate profile pictures from text inputs. Alongside the options to edit or change profile pictures, users now have the ability to create one. This feature prompts users to “Describe an Image” using text, which is then utilized by the AI model to craft a personalized profile photo.
This new feature likely aligns with Meta’s efforts to enhance privacy on WhatsApp. Recently, Meta introduced a feature preventing the capture of screenshots of profile pictures on the messaging platform. The adoption of AI-generated images as profile pictures is aimed at mitigating the risk of image misuse or unauthorized sharing, according to the report.
While still in development, the feature is expected to be rolled out soon in certain regions. Meta has yet to introduce AI-generated stickers to India, a feature enabling users to create custom shareable stickers on WhatsApp through AI.
In other developments, WABetaInfo previously revealed that WhatsApp is testing a feature allowing users to clear all unread chats at once. This feature, reportedly found within the app’s notification settings as the “clear unread when app opens” option, will enable users to reset their unread message count upon opening the app. Although spotted in another beta version of the app, the feature remains inactive for now.
