AMD Unveils New AI Processors, Sets Ambitious Two-Year Roadmap to Challenge Nvidia 2024

TAIPEI – June 3, 2024 – Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence processors and outlined an ambitious plan to develop AI chips over the next two years, aiming to challenge industry leader Nvidia.

At the Computex technology trade show, AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced the MI325X accelerator, slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2024. This move comes as the race to develop generative AI programs intensifies, driving significant demand for advanced chips used in AI data centers.

Santa Clara-based AMD is striving to compete against Nvidia, which currently holds approximately 80% of the AI semiconductor market. Following Nvidia’s strategy to accelerate its release cycle to annually, AMD has announced similar plans.

“AI is clearly our number one priority as a company, and we have harnessed all of our development capabilities to focus on this,” Su stated. “The annual cadence is essential as the market demands newer products and capabilities. Each year, we aim to introduce the next big thing, ensuring we maintain the most competitive portfolio.”

AMD also introduced the MI350 series of chips, expected in 2025, which will feature a new architecture. These chips are projected to perform 35 times better in AI inference compared to the current MI300 series. Additionally, AMD revealed plans for the MI400 series, set for release in 2026, based on an architecture dubbed “Next.”

Investors are closely monitoring these developments, seeking long-term updates from chip firms to assess the sustainability of the booming generative AI sector. Since the start of 2023, AMD’s shares have more than doubled, although this rise is modest compared to Nvidia’s seven-fold increase.

AMD aims for an annual AI chip product cycle, aligning with Nvidia’s similar strategy. In April, Su projected AI chip sales to reach approximately $4 billion in 2024, up $500 million from previous estimates.

At Computex, AMD also announced that its latest generation of central processing units (CPUs) would be available in the second half of 2024. While businesses mainly focus on AI chips for data centers, some of AMD’s CPUs are designed to work with graphics processing units (GPUs).

AMD detailed the architecture for its new neural processing units (NPUs), dedicated to handling on-device AI tasks in AI PCs. Chipmakers are banking on enhanced AI capabilities to stimulate growth in the PC market, which is emerging from a prolonged slump.

PC manufacturers such as HP and Lenovo are expected to release devices featuring AMD’s AI PC chips. AMD’s processors reportedly exceed Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC requirements, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing AI technology across various platforms.
